Summary | 0000739: LuaTeX segfault on mips64el hardware
Description | I am witnessing a segfault in LuaTeX when it attempts to compile my book on mips64el hardware. Compiling a trivial hello world, however, is fine. I don't think it is an endian issue since this hardware is little endian which is probably what LuaTeX's developers are using. I am using LuaTeX beta 0.71.0-2011122518 (rev 4358) and I have attached the output of its execution with a hopefully useful stacktrace.
Steps To Reproduce | See the attached console output.
Additional Information | Using luatex version beta-0.71.0-2011122518 (rev 4358).
Tags | No tags attached. | ||||

If it is not endianness, there is a fair chance that the bug can be repeated on another 64-bit platform with the same input. Would you mind sharing those sources with me (confidentially, if needed)? |
Hey Taco. I don't think it's a 64-bit issue, as the machine I do most of my work on is amd64 hardware running a kernel compiled for amd64. By sources, do you mean the input that prompted the crash? |
Yes, exactly that. Even if it is not a 64-bit issue, perhaps I will see something suspicious in the debugger in the code path leading up to the crash |
Actually, as Mojca reminded me: Kip is using mips64el hardware, but mipsel (32-bit) operating system. So in theory they would be using the same architecture, only different hardware. |
Mojca came up with the following: Here's a minimal example that generates the problem: \definetextbackground[CodeExampleFrame] [location=paragraph] \definetyping [CodeExample] [before=\startCodeExampleFrame, after=\stopCodeExampleFrame] \starttext \startCodeExample hello \stopCodeExample \stoptext Compiled with ConTeXt MKIV 2011.11.23 18:58 and LuaTeX beta-0.71.0-2011122518 (rev 4358), but even though ConTeXt is old, LuaTeX should not segfault. I get more or less the same backtrace - it breaks during hyphenation (replacing "hello" with dots won't generate a problem). The example compiles fine on my Mac, but I didn't try that exact version of ConTeXt yet. |

The backtrace I just uploaded was the one Mojca managed to capture. It also replicates the segfault successfully. |
Just a note: I tested with the same version of ConTeXt on Mac OS X and it works just fine. I also tried ConTeXt distribution on mipsel and it crashed with that one as well (I tested with 2011.11.23 and 2012.01.02 which I happened to have at hand), so it cannot be a distibution-only related problem (unless there is other interference on the same machine). |
armv7l-linux experiences the same problem. |
The problem here is surely with the char_lang() macro, which is defined in tex/texnodes.h as this ugly contraption: # define char_lang(a) ((const int)(signed short)(((signed int)((unsigned)lang_data(a)&0x7FFF0000)<<1)>>17)) what it is trying to get at here is an 15bit value based on bit 17-31 of an 32-bit word. (bits 1-8 are righthyphenmin, bits 9-16 lefthyphenmin, and bit 32 is uchyph). |
Hey Taco. Let me know if you'd like me to test anything on the hardware when I get a chance. Great eyes and insight, by the way. |
I just discovered that in my binary, I also get -1 for clang. It just is not a problem on linux-64, apparently. Knowing this, it should now be easy to fix. |
Really glad to hear that, Taco. Let me know if there is anything I can do. My time is tight, but I know what it's like to have an obnoxious and difficult to reproduce bug you want to squash in your project. |
Should be fixed now. The problem was not mipsel-specific, it just happened to be the only complaining platform. The number of allowed \languages is now limited to 16383, and negative values prohibit hyphenation (as in TeX82) |
